Furry Friend Friday With Bosco!

bosco 4

It’s our favorite day of the week again, Furry Friend Friday!  Our special guest this week is extra cute if you ask us, he’s a 7 month-old schnauzer mix named Bosco!  This cute little puppy is currently up for adoption at the Scituate Animal Shelter and has been there since July, so he’s overdue to find his forever family!

So Bosco, how does a cute little pup like you wind up in a shelter?

Well I was actually found as a stray on the south shore, I’m not exactly sure where, but Animal Control picked me up.  They didn’t have a facility to keep me in, so I ended up at the Scituate Animal Shelter!  I really lucked out, everyone here is so nice!  I’m definitely ready to find my forever family though, I’ve been here since July and even though everyone here is so nice, I’d love to have a family that could give me all of their attention and love!

What’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I’m still a puppy, so I’m VERY active.  I love to run around outside, go for walks, explore new places like the beach, and play with my toys!  The staff here are always trying to get me to play fetch, and I always run after the ball but won’t pick it up and bring it back, I guess you could say I’m still figuring that game out.

Do you have a favorite toy?

I love those fluffy toys with a squeaker on the inside.  Not only are they cute and cuddly, but I can’t get enough of that squeaky sound!

Is there anything that makes you nervous?

Not really, everyone here says that I’m a very confident and outgoing boy.  I guess my time on the streets as a stray made me pretty tough!

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well as you already know, I’m still a puppy, and I hate to admit it but I could definitely use some more training.  I’d need to go to a family that could be patient with me and show me the ropes so that I can be the best pet possible!  I’d also love to go to a family with kids that I could play with, the staff here think that I should go to a home with kids ages 8 and up, since I can be a bit rambunctious when I play and wouldn’t want to knock down any little kids.  My last request would be to go to a family that could handle my energy level.  I’d need to go on long walks or be able to run around inside a fenced-in back yard.

Bosco, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Hmm, well I know I’m just a young pup but it seems obvious to me that pet insurance is a good idea.  Pets can get sick or hurt unexpectedly and those vet bills can be very expensive!  I think that pet insurance sounds like a good idea because if pet owners have it, they won’t have to pay a huge bill at once if their pet needs to go to the vet.

Bosco may be young, but he’s a very quick learner!  That’s why we’re sure he’ll find the perfect family for him very soon!  If you think pet insurance sounds like something you’d be interested in, call us for a free quote and take the first step to protecting your furry friend’s future!

Furry Friend Friday With Arlo!

Arlo

What’s the best way to start off the weekend? With a Furry Friend Friday interview of course!  We’re back with your weekly dose of cuteness, and today the furry friend we got to speak with is Arlo!  He’s a feisty, 6 month-old terrier mix up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem and is patiently waiting for his forever family.

So Arlo, how does a handsome guy like you find himself in a shelter?

Well believe it or not, someone left me tied to a pole!  Can you believe someone would just leave me like that?  Luckily I was found by some nice people and brought to the shelter as a stray.  I was never claimed so now I’m ready to find my new best friend!

So what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Running, running, and more running!  I may be small, but these little legs can move!  I’m still a puppy so I have a ton of energy, and I’m very curious so I love to investigate my surroundings.  I also love playing with toys, although I don’t really have a favorite one.

Is there anything that scares you?

Nope, I’m very outgoing and can’t  think of anything that scares me.  I’m kind of known as a tough guy around the shelter, they say I can be fresh but I’m not mean at all, I’ve never bitten anyone I just get mouthy when I want some attention.  I think I’m the boss and want all of your attention for myself!

Is there anything that makes you extra unique?

Even though I’m a terrier, I have very soft fur and my friends at the shelter say I can look like all different kinds of dog breeds depending on my haircut!  I used to have a cut that made me look like a schnauzer, but I think this look is much more “me”.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well first off, I’d say no young kids.  Like I said, some consider me to be fresh, and I also love attention so I don’t want any kids taking that away from me!  I don’t like being bossed around, so I would also need a dog savvy owner that would know how to discipline me.  I’d also love to be with a family that was as active as me, I have so much energy and would love to burn it off at the beach or on a hike!

Arlo, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Pets get sick just like people do, I’ve seen it with my own two eyes!  It seems like it would just make sense to have insurance to protect your pet so that if they get hurt or sick they can get the care they need without breaking the bank.

Arlo may be young, but he’s a fast learner!  He knows the value of pet insurance, and how important it can be when it comes to protecting your furry friend!  Call one of our agents today for a free quote and take the first step on the road to protecting your furry friend!

Is Competition In The Insurance Industry Benefiting Massachusetts Drivers?

car

In 2008, the auto insurance market in Massachusetts was deregulated resulting in major changes for both consumers and insurance carriers alike. As more carriers began to write policies in the state, prices initially dropped.  However, prices have since rebounded and now closely resemble what consumers were paying before the industry was deregulated, according to data from the state Division of Insurance.  The question then arises; Is competition in the industry actually benefiting Massachusetts residents?

Recently, an article titled “Auto Insurance Rates Bounce Back Up In Mass.” was published in the Boston Globe.  The article was written by Deirdre Fernandes and she tries to determine whether or not consumers are benefiting from competition in the auto insurance industry by studying year-to-year comparisons of auto insurance premiums.  Before deregulation, insurance carriers typically had the same prices and offerings for their consumers, prompting larger carriers to avoid writing policies in Massachusetts due to the strict regulation of the industry.

After the deregulation, larger carriers such as Progressive and Geico began writing policies with extremely low premiums, forcing established carriers to lower their prices in order to maintain their business.  Since then, prices have risen as these larger carriers have become more familiar with paying out claims in the state. However, it is important to note that according to Fernandes’ article, repair costs and medical costs (all of which factor into claim payouts) are increasing faster in Massachusetts than across the nation as a whole, which also affect premium prices.

In her article, Fernandes quotes Deirdre Cummings, legislative Director of the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group who said “If you look at rates and rates are going higher, that’s not in the consumer’s favor.”  Fernandes also plays devil’s advocate by acknowledging the fact that because insurance carriers are no longer regulated, they are able to offer unique services to their customers such as roadside assistance and specific discounts relating to bundling policies together, good student discounts, annual mileage discounts, etc.  Fernandes then quotes Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner Joe Murphy who says “It’s clear that the change in regulation has been a win for consumers”.

While Fernandes does address both sides of the argument, Joe Murphy takes issue with her analysis and wrote a response to her article.  In it, he states “Year-over-year comparisons of auto insurance premiums do not provide a sound foundation for commentary about rate levels or the general health of the insurance market.”  Essentially he argues that the increase in competition gives consumers the power to shop around if their premium does increase, making carriers compete for their business.

The competition also encourages insurance carriers to keep their own profits down so that they can keep premiums as low as possible.  In his response, Murphy says “In the five years prior to 2012, auto insurers in Massachusetts reported virtually zero profit from underwriting, the lowest of any New England state during that same period.”

One of the most important things to take away from both articles is that while insurance premiums may be about the same as they were before deregulation, consumers now have options and the ability to shop around if their premium does go up.  The power is in the hands of the consumer, and they are able to purchase policies not only based on price, but also based on coverage, available discounts, additional services, and much more.

As an independent agency, we are proud to work with many top-rated insurance companies including Commerce, Plymouth Rock, Arbella, Progressive, Safeco, Travelers, and Occidental.  We give our customers options when it comes to purchasing their policy and are unbiased in the quotes we provide. Our goal is to find Massachusetts residents the policy that is right for them.  So, if you’re looking to compare auto insurance rates in Massachusetts and find the best policy for you, get a free quote at MassDrive.com!  Our insurance agents are extremely knowledgeable and will work to find the policy that is right for you!

Tips For Moving Day

moving

Whether you’re moving into a condo, apartment, house, or dorm room, moving day can be an extremely stressful and taxing experience.  There’s so much to do, packing, labeling, hauling, unpacking, there’s a lot of room for error which is why we thought we’d pull together some helpful tips!

  • Be ready to start early!  Moving day will probably feel like one of the longest of your life, but it’s important to get up early and make sure everything is packed and good to go.  You’ll want to make sure everything is ready once the movers or family and friends arrive.
  • Map out your route and make sure that you, as well as any movers know how to get there all well.  You’ll also want to make sure there’s room for everyone to park and unload.
  • If possible, try and pre-clean your home before you move in.  That way everything will be ready to use such as the shower, toilet, etc.  You’ll still have to do some cleaning after you unpack everything, there’s sure to be a bit of a mess but at least you’ll already have a head start!
  • Enlist the help of friends and family if possible.  Not only will this save money, but it may also make the process more fun! Just make sure you have everyone’s tasks figured out so the process can be as seamless as possible, and that you’re ready to go as soon as they arrive!
  • Arrange for a charity organization to come pick up any goods you’re willing to donate about a week or two before the move.  Many charities will haul away furniture and other items free of charge as long as they have use for them.
  • Minimize the use of cardboard boxes by packing with items you already have such as suitcases, duffel bags, backpacks, etc.
  • Avoid packing in trash bags, they could be mistaken for trash and accidentally thrown out, and if you’re using a moving service some movers have rules against moving belongings in trash bags.
  • When labeling boxes, label which room they’re going to go in to make unpacking easier.  You’ll know where to put them when you initially bring them in, and can unpack by room, which may help the whole process seem less overwhelming.  You’ll also want to make sure you label boxes on the side instead of on top, that way you can still read them if the boxes are stacked.
  • Pack all of your valuables such as jewelry and important paperwork in a separate bag and bring them with you.  If you’re using a moving service or even getting help from friends, you won’t want to entrust those things to anyone but yourself.
  • Take an inventory of boxes and their contents, especially if you’re using a moving company.  It’ll come in handy if something goes missing.
  • Pack an overnight bag with all of the necessities you will need easy access to, such as toiletries, phone chargers, and an extra change of clothes.  You won’t want to have to dig through boxes to try and find your toothbrush after a long day of moving.
  • If you’re renting, take pictures of your cleaned out apartment when moving in and when moving out, this will make it much easier when trying to get your security deposit back and when you’re dealing with landlords who want to charge you for cleaning and repair fees that may be totally unnecessary.
  • If you have young children or pets, arrange for a family member or babysitter to watch them during moving day, otherwise they will more than likely get in the way and be an additional stress factor.
  • Make sure your utilities are in order and have been set up.  You’ll want your gas, electricity, and water to be working when you move in.
  • Reward your movers!  After a long day of hauling boxes and furniture, your movers are bound to be tired, and whether they’re hired or friends and family, it’s a nice gesture to have some food and drinks available.
  • Lastly, you’ll want to make sure that your new home and all of your property is properly insured, and that’s where we come in!  Whether you’re renting or own a home, we can help you find the policy that’s right for you, so call us today for a free quote!

We know moving will be stressful no matter how many tips you read, but hopefully these will help to minimize that and will make the day run a little bit more smoothly!

Furry Friend Friday With Daisy!

daisy

We’re back with another cutie to make your Friday afternoon that much better!  Meet Daisy, she’s certainly as cute as a daisy if you ask us!  This little girl is a 2 year-old hound mix up for adoption at the Sterling Animal Shelter and has been there for about a month now, so she’s been waiting a while for the perfect family!

So Daisy, what do you like to do for fun?

I’m just your typical pup, I like the simple things like long walks where I can take in the smells and sounds of the great outdoors, playing ball, and hanging out with my favorite people.  I’m very affectionate and love getting extra attention and belly rubs!

Do you have a favorite toy you like to play with?

I’d have to say my ball, I love chasing it and it’s so bouncy!  Like I said, I’m pretty simple and can be happy doing just about anything.

Is there anything that you’re afraid of?

Nope!  There isn’t much that can make this girl nervous, my previous owners thought that I was a little nervous around men, but I haven’t been afraid of any of the men I’ve met here at the shelter.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well, if I could choose, I would love to go to a home with people that would take me on a lot of walks!  I would say I have a medium activity level, so I’m not very hyper but I still like to be out and about whenever possible.  Other than that, I would say I would do best in an adult-only home, it’s not that I don’t like kids, just because of my size I wouldn’t want to accidentally knock them over or anything.  The other thing is that I would be best as an only pet, I don’t really get along with cats, come on, can you blame me?  When it comes to other dogs I don’t mind them but I would still prefer to be the only pet so I can have all of the attention!

So Daisy, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well I know I’m young, and I’ve been lucky enough to be healthy and accident-free so far, but other pets aren’t as lucky.  Some pets can eat the wrong thing, or come down with an ear infection, there are tons of different things that can land your furry friend in the vet’s office, and land you with a huge bill.  Pet insurance sounds like a good way to prevent a giant, unexpected vet bill that will drain your savings account.

For such a young girl, Daisy sure is smart, and adorable of course!  We know she’ll find her forever family soon, but she makes a great point about pet insurance.  No one wants a huge vet bill because their pet accidentally ate a chocolate bar or came down with an illness, so call one of our agents today for a free quote and find out exactly how affordable pet insurance can be!

Furry Friend Friday With Chico!

chico 3

Happy Furry Friend Friday!  Who’s ready for their weekly does of cuteness?  We know we are!  Meet Chico, a feisty 3 year-old chihuahua up for adoption at Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem.  Chico’s been in the shelter for a few months now and is patiently waiting for the perfect family for him!

So Chico, what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

I’m a man of many interests, but I’d have to say my favorite thing to do is just be around my favorite people, and there aren’t many of those.  I’m very selective with who I give my affection to, but if you’re one of the lucky ones you’ll never find a more loyal friend.  If I could, I’d stay with my favorite people all the time, I love sitting on their laps and going for rides with them in the car, and the best part is that I’m travel size!

Do you have a favorite toy to play with?

I like to play ball sometimes but other than that, I’m not very interested in toys.  I’d much rather get a nice head scratch while I lounge on the couch!

Is there anything that scares you?

Well I’d say I get nervous when I’m around new people, if they come at me too fast and I don’t know them it makes me jump and I don’t like it.  I also get overwhelmed in crowds, like if my people were having a party at their house I’d rather be upstairs in the bedroom and have some space to myself.  I also don’t like being in a crate or anything, I get very anxious and would rather be free to roam around the house.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

I would prefer to be in a home that’s pretty quiet, and with someone who can be home a lot so we can keep each other company.  If I found someone who was retired that would be perfect! We could have breakfast together and then watch some TV, I’m a fan of “The Price Is Right”, and then run some errands together!  Other than that my only requirement is to be in a home with no kids, sometimes they can make me nervous because I like my boundaries and personal space before I get to know someone, and kids aren’t always good at that.

Chico, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well, dogs of all ages can get sick or have an accident unexpectedly.  For example, I’m a young guy but when I first arrived at the shelter I had a skin condition on my ears, and luckily the staff here were able to get it cleaned up but if I had owners that had to pay for it, it would have been pretty costly.  Pet insurance seems like a good thing because you only have to pay a small amount each month, to make sure your pet can get the health care they need if they get sick or hurt.

Chico’s a very smart pup, and is right when he says vet treatments can be costly.  Pet insurance is an affordable investment that will help you get your furry friend the care they need without draining your savings.  Call one of our agents today for a free quote!

Furry Friend Friday With Leo!

leo 2

We’re back with another Furry Friend Friday interview and this one is extra special!  Leo is a three year-old boy that came all the way across the pond to find his forever home!  He’s up for adoption at Greyhound Friends, Inc in Hopkinton.

So Leo, I hear that you came all the way across the pond to be here, is that correct?

Yes it is!  I’m originally from Ireland so I came a long ways to find a forever home.  Believe it or not there are a lot of us greyhounds over in Ireland, but we aren’t really seen as pets so we often get transported to the U.S. or even Italy for homes.  I was with a great group over there called Limerick Animal Welfare and they worked very hard to get me over here and give me the chance to find a wonderful new home, so I will never forget my Irish roots!

What’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I’m a very social guy, so I love being around people.  Everyone at the shelter says I’m so outgoing and friendly, they love being around me as much as I love being around them!  I’m a very calm boy, I like to hang around and get a good nap in but I also like to play and run around every so often.  They say I’m the best of both worlds because I can be active if my family wants to play or go for a walk, but I’m just as happy to curl up at their feet and relax.

Do you have a favorite treat?

I’ll take anything I can get when it comes to food!  I LOVE to eat and I’ll be happy with whatever is offered, I’m not a finicky eater at all.

Is there anything that makes you nervous?

Well I don’t really like loud traffic noises, car horns, sirens, things like that.  I’m a mellow guy and those loud noises make me antsy.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

As long as there are no cats, I could go anywhere.  I’m not particularly fond of cats but I’d be great with other dogs whether they’re big or small.  I love all people too so I could go to a home with small children as long as they are kind to me.  My only request is to go to a family that will bring me somewhere I can run free every so often, as long as it’s fenced in of course.

Leo, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

You wouldn’t believe some of the things I’ve seen out in the world, it can be a dangerous place!  Unexpected illnesses, accidents, all kinds of things can happen that you aren’t ready for.  These things can be tough enough without wondering how you’re going to pay for them, so pet insurance seems like a good idea because it’s one less thing to worry about if you pet needs urgent vet care.

Leo is a very smart, and well traveled boy, he’s seen a lot in his short life and know how important it is to be prepared.  Pet insurance can make sure that you’re prepared for those situations you hope will never happen, but sometimes they do come up in life.  Call on of our agents today for a free quote, it’s the first step in protecting your furry friend from the unexpected!

Furry Friend Friday With Lincoln!

lincoln

Ready for a Furry Friend Friday interview?  Lincoln has been excited for his turn in the spotlight all week!  This 6 year-old boy is energetic, friendly, and ready for his forever home.  He’s currently up for adoption at the Scituate Animal Shelter and has been there for about a month.  If you think Lincoln could be your new best friend pay him a visit!

So Lincoln, what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I’m very energetic, so I love to stay active.  I like playing outside, going for walks, exploring the great outdoors, and just trying anything fun, I’m very adventurous! You might think that because of my age I might start to slow down at this point, but not me.  I’m still young at heart and am willing to prove it!  Stop by and pay me a visit and you’ll see what I mean!

Do you have a favorite toy to play with?

I absolutely love to chase balls!  I’d have to say those are my favorite toys, they’re so versatile, they can bounce, roll, or get thrown.  They’re basically a jack of all trades compared to other toys.

What about a favorite place to walk?

We’re very lucky here at the shelter, we have a ton of volunteers that come to walk us every day.  They bring us outside to these fields next to a bunch of woods and I love it there.  I get to smell the breeze, and become one with nature, it’s the best.

Is there anything that scares you?

Nope, I’m not afraid of anything, at least nothing comes to mind right away.  Beagles are a pretty tough dogs, we don’t scare too easy and make great watch dogs.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well I love all adults, so I would be great in a home with an active couple, or even a family with older children.  I love playing with kids, but would probably be better with bigger ones that are 10 and up.  I also get along great with my fellow canines, so if you already have a dog I’m sure we would become friends right away!

Lincoln, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Not only are beagles tough, we’re smart too, and I can spot a good deal when I see one!  Pet insurance seems smart to me because it’s inevitable that any pet will need to go to the vet, and if something’s wrong with us, the bill will be pretty big if you don’t have pet insurance.

Lincoln is right, inevitably most pets will have to go to the vet because they’re having a health issue or had an accident that injured them.  The bills associated with injuries and illnesses can climb pretty high pretty fast, but pet insurance will allow you to make a small payment each month so that your pet can be covered if they need to go to the vet, and you won’t need to break the bank.  Call one of our agents today for a free quote and take the first step on the road to protecting your furry friend!

Furry Friend Friday With Louie!

louie 1

It’s the first Furry Friend Friday interview of spring!  Are you as excited as we are the spring is finally here?  Louie is very excited!  He’s a 1 year-old Beabull up for adoption at the Sterling Animal Shelter in Sterling.  What’s a Beabull you ask?  It’s a beagle and bulldog mix, which is pretty rare if you ask us.  If you think Louie could be your new best friend stop by and pay him a visit!

So Louie, what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I’m still a puppy so I LOVE to play!  I’m a big boy though, I weigh 70 pounds but I’m a gentle giant.  I love people, but since I’m so big I would need to be with people that know how to handle a big, energetic pup like me.  One of my favorite things to do is to go outside and run, I can go pretty fast but I get tuckered out pretty easily.  Once I start running I don’t last too long after and then I’m ready for a nap.

Do you have a favorite toy?

I love all toys!  I’m very gentle with my toys though, I don’t rip them apart or anything.  I also have a blankie that I love to sleep with.

Is there anything that scares you?

No, I’m really just a goofball at heart and am always happy.  I don’t scare too easy at all so I think I would make a great watch dog!

louie 2

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well like I said I’m a big boy and sometimes I forget my own strength, so I would need to go to an experienced dog owner.  Another thing is that I would probably need some leash training, so a family that would be patient and maybe bring me to a training class would be ideal.  I’m also very good with other dogs as long as they’re the same size as me and love to play.  I probably wouldn’t be good with small children either, not because I don’t like them, I just wouldn’t want to accidentally knock them down.

Louie, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well I’m still young, but I’ve already been to the vet a few times in my short life, for check-ups, shots, and things like that.  I’m guessing that as the years go on I’ll have to keep going to the vet and at some point may even get sick or have an accident of some kind where I would need vet care, as will all pets.

Louie is right, most pets will need to go to the vet at some point for either an injury or sickness, and having pet insurance is a good way to be prepared for any unexpected health costs for your furry friend.  Call one of our agents today for a free quote and take the first step to protecting your furry friend!

Furry Friend Friday With Jinxy!

jinxy1

Friday’s are always fun when we get to interview a new furry friend!  Today I got to chat with Jinxy, an 11 year-old girl up for adoption at the Lowell Humane Society.  This girl loves to cuddle and has been at the shelter since November, so she is definitely ready to find a forever family to call her own!

So Jinxy, what is your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I’m an older gal so I like to relax a lot, my favorite way to do that is by laying near the window with my belly up in the air and soaking up some sun.  I love being around people and I absolutely love being petted, but not picked up.  As much as I like to relax, I still enjoy playing with my toys every day!

jinxy2

Do you have a favorite toy?

I love my scratching post!  I mean I really love all toys, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be my scratching post for sure.  I also love catnip, so if you have that and a scratching post too, you might be my new best friend!

Is there anything that scares you?

There isn’t really anything that scares me, but there are things that annoy me, such as other animals, I would prefer to be the only pet in my new home.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well for starters, one where I would be the only pet.  Other than that my only request is for a nice, sunny spot by the window where I can relax and nap, okay and maybe a few toys to play with too.  I love all people, big and small, old and young.  I’m a smart girl and am fully trained, and I’m very affectionate, I would love to find a home sooner than later!

Jinxy why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well I’m an old and wise lady, and I know that pet insurance is a good option because it means you’re prepared for the unexpected, and it’s always better to be prepared than unprepared.  Whether pets are young or old, we can always get sick or have an accident when we least expect it.  Pet insurance would ensure that we could get all the vet care we need without breaking the bank.

When our pets have an unexpected accident or illness, of course we want to provide them with the best possible care, but that can be hard to do without breaking the bank.  With pet insurance, you can make sure that your furry friend can get the care they need without putting you in debt.  Call one of our agents today for a free quote and take the first step to protecting your furry friend!
