Giving Back This Holiday Season!

ID-100221137

The holidays are the perfect time of year to reflect on what you’re grateful for and to keep those in mind that aren’t as fortunate.  That’s why we’ve come up with this blog on different charity events taking place this December!  Sometimes the best gift you can give others is hope, and by donating your time, money, or whatever you can spare, you’re giving hope to those in need during the holiday season and making their day just a little bit brighter.

Jolly Jaunt – Want to get a head start on burning off all of those calories you’re going to eat over the holidays? The Jolly Jaunt at the Lahey Outpatient Center in Danvers is the perfect way to do so all while giving back!  Join them on Sunday, December 8th for their annual 5K road race/walk and Kids’ 1K Fun Run!  Funds raised will help provide year-round training and competition for 11,000 Special Olympics Athletes in Massachusetts!  After the race there will be a VIP Reception with music, awards, raffles, prizes, and different food from some of the best restaurants on the North Shore!  If you’re interested in participating make sure you register by Friday, December 6th at 9 AM!

Helping Paws for the Holidays – Want to commemorate the holidays with your furry friend? Take them to get their picture with Santa and/or the Grinch at the Eagles Lodge in Lakeville!  This event takes place from December 7-8th, from 10 AM – 4 PM.  The cost is $20 and includes a photo package (includes a single pose photo burned onto a CD and pet goodie bag!)  which can be of just your pet or can include family members as well.  This fundraiser benefits police K9’s Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.  This non-profit organization raises funds to purchase bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement dogs, a great cause to support!

Boston’s 7th Annual Ugly Sweater Party – We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; everyone loves an ugly sweater party! Don’t miss Boston’s biggest and longest running ugly sweater bash presented by the b Positive Project.  This event will be on Saturday, December 14th at the Hard Rock Cafe and promises to be one of the best parties of the holiday season.  There will be music from the band Classic Yellow, drink specials, pictures with Santa, prizes, and a silent auction which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Tickets are $25 online and at the door but if you register by December 6th you can get them for $20!

Sleigh Full of Laughs – Join local comedians’ Lenny Clarke, Dave Russo, Tony V, and others on Thursday, December 19th for this comedy event benefiting Globe Santa, the Boston Globe’s annual appeal to help needy children in the Boston area.  This event is being hosted by Giggles Comedy Club at Prince Pizzeria in Saugus.  Tickets are $25 and this event is sure to leave you feeling jolly and bright just in time for the holidays!

All of these charity events benefit wonderful causes, so whichever one you go to you can’t go wrong!  Plan a day out with family, friends, or even co-workers and head to one of these fun events!

Country 102.5 20th Year Celebration – Celebrate Country 102.5’s 20th year at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston on Thursday, October 3rd with American Idol favorite Kellie Pickler and special guest Charlie Worsham!  This acoustic performance is limited to those that are 21 and over, and the cost is $20.  Doors open at 7 PM and the concert begins at 8 PM, so make sure you arrive early to get a good spot!  All proceeds will benefit the Floating Hospital for Children at the Tufts Medical Center which provides comfort and care to children and their families when they need it most.  Grab your friends and head to the Hard Rock for a fun night of music, while doing some good for local families.

Central Massachusetts Walk To Cure Diabetes – This fun-filled charity walk takes place in various locations across the country, and this one will be held on Sunday, October 6th at the Bolton Fair Grounds in Lancaster.  The walk raises funds and awareness for the millions of people that are living with type 1 diabetes.  There is no registration fee although guests are encouraged to register for the walk ahead of time.  You can either walk alone or create a team and fundraise together.  The walk begins at 10:30 AM and is a 5K, it will be held rain or shine so make sure you dress for the weather.

Howl O Ween – For all of you animal lovers out there, this charity event will be a fun day out for you and your furry friend!  This fundraiser benefits the German Shepherd Research and Rescue Center and will take place at Endicott Park in Danvers on Sunday, October 13th from 10 AM – 3 PM.  Admission is free and there will be tons of fun activities going on throughout the day including a pledge walk, costume contest, dog demo’s, lucky ticket raffle, vendors, and much more.

Making Strides Walk To End Breast Cancer – October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and this month you can join the American Cancer Society for their annual Making Strides Walk in Worcester on October 20th at 10:30 AM.  This non-competitive, 2.5 mile walk not only raises funds to assist in life-saving research, but also raises awareness for this disease that effects 1 in 8 women.  There are other walks going on across the state this month, in Boston, Greater Springfield, Cape Cod, Berkshire County, and Nantucket so find the one that’s closest to you and sign up to join the fight against breast cancer!  Keep in mind that these walks are on different dates and possibly different lengths than the one in Worcester, so make sure you look into the details for the walk closest to you!

It’s easy to give back and have fun all at the same time this month, whether you’re working up a sweat at a charity walk, enjoying a concert, or having a fun day with your furry friend, there’s something going on this month for everyone to enjoy!

February Events In The Bay State!

Need some entertainment to get you through these cold winter days?  Look no further!  Even though it’s been pretty gloomy out there are still tons of events going on in Boston and we’ve found some of the best ones.  If you like music, animals, sports, or eating (that should cover everyone) you won’t be disappointed!  Grab your loved ones and check out these events before cabin fever sets in!

Poe’s Kitchen Burrito Bowl III – Who doesn’t like a good burrito now and then?  This is your chance to get the BEST burrito in Boston as top chefs from the area compete at the Rattlesnake Bar and Grill in the 3rd annual Burrito Bowl!  Keeping in the Superbowl spirit, each chef will create an original burrito reflecting the city of their favorite NFL team. Each burrito will be served bowl-style instead of as a wrap, and will be judged by attendees as well as guest “referees”.  Chefs in the running are Tremont 647’s Andy Husbands; Poe’s Kitchen At The Rattlesnake’s Shawn Russell; Estelle’s Southern Cuisine’s Eric Gburski; The Tip Tap Room’s Brian Poe; Taranta’s Jose Duarte; Church’s Josh Rush; Boloco’s Jason Hutchinson; and the reigning Burrito Bowl champ, Brian Roche of Lolita.  The event is this Saturday, February 2nd and tickets are $20.

Boston Harbor Seal Watch – Yes you read that right, a seal, not whale watch in Boston Harbor!  The next seal watch is Saturday, February 2nd and departs from two locations; the Quincy Shipyard at 10:15 AM and from the Long Wharf in Boston at 11 AM.  The tours are an hour and a half and cost $20 per ticket for adults ages 13-64, $15 for children ages 4-12 and seniors (65+), and free for children under 3.   Harbor seals spend their time in Boston from late December until early March, they love the cold water!  They are extremely intelligent and spend their time hunting for fish and sunbathing on the rocks and now is your chance to see them in their natural habitat!  Sponsored by the Boston Harbor Alliance and Boston’s Best Cruises this harbor adventure won’t leave you disappointed.

The Beanpot Hockey Tournament – Every local knows that the first two Monday nights in February are the biggest nights in Boston hockey, the Beanpot tournament!  Get your tickets while you can and watch the Harvard, Boston College, Boston University, and Northeastern hockey teams compete in this tournament where the winner will have bragging rights until the next tournament!  This has been a staple event in the world of Boston sports since 1952 and encourages a little healthy competition between local colleges.  The first night of games begins on Monday, February 4th at 5 PM when Boston University and Northeastern square off, followed by Boston College vs. Harvard at 8 PM.  On Monday, February 11th there will be a consolation game at 4:30 PM before the championship game begins at 7:30!  Do you think Boston College will remain the champs or will someone else beat them for the title?

Cry Me A River (The Valentines Hangover Dance Party) – Even though his newest single was a little weak, everyone knows Justin Timberlake is a heavy hitter in the entertainment industry.  Although we can’t promise you JT himself, we can get you pretty close.  The one and only Justin Timberlake cover band, The Timberfakes are performing Friday, February 15th at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston!  Whether you’re recovering from Valentine’s day or just looking for a good time, you won’t want to miss this dance party celebration.  Tickets are $12 per person so get them before they sell out!

Don’t let this weather keep you from getting out of the house!  Grab your friends, family, or plan a date night and head out to one of these awesome events this month!
