January Events In Massachusetts

As the New Year begins, the weather starts has started to drop into brutal cold winter territory- but that doesn’t mean you should start hibernating! The month of January has a ton of events going on that are worth going out for! Here are a few of MassDrive’s favorite events happening this month.

Boston Celtic Music Festival:
January 8th- 9th

This cultural festival brings together over 100 musicians, a parade, and a ton of dancing! To start off the event, a parade will take place in Harvard Square, followed by a concert at Club Passim friday night.  The fun continues all day Saturday with various artists playing Irish fiddle music, Scottish, Cape Breton, Quebecois, and more throughout various venues in Cambridge.  Finish Saturday night off right with a final concert and dancing. Tickets are required for certain events, or you may purchase a weekend pass.

Yoga at the Boston Public Library:
January 12th- February 16th (12-1 p.m.)
Back Bay Boston

For the first time ever, you are allowed, even encouraged to exercise in the Boston Public Library! The ever so popular instructor Rebecca Pacheco will host a Yoga class every Tuesday from 12-1 p.m. in the historic Abbey Room of the McKim Building. Work on your downward dog and sun salutation in this beautiful and tranquil room.  The class will cater to all levels of fitness designed to help you unplug and recharge. While the program plans to end in February, if it proves popular the BPL might extend it.  Be sure to grab your yoga matt and head there early as the event will run on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrations:
January 18th
Throughout Boston

While there are numerous events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and his role in civil rights, peace and equality in America, one of the largest celebrations is at Fanuiel Hall on Boston’s Freedom trail.  Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Intensive Community Program will pay tribute to distinguished guests through a special musical performance.  The Harlem Gospel Choir will continue it’s tradition to fill Harvard’s Sanders Theatre for this annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. with soulful music and dancing.  The Museum of Fine Arts will also offer free admission throughout the day as well as showcase films, performances and art activities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Taste of East Boston:
January 28th (6 to 9 p.m.)
East Boston

Do not miss out on this tasty event! Featuring over 30 local restaurants, life entertainment, cash bar, raffles and more, this annual festival has a ton to offer. Restaurants will include cuisines from South America, the Mediterranean, China, Italy, and the Middle East with PLENTY of samples of their most popular dishes. Parking for the event is available at the Hilton, and it’s free! Also, all proceeds from charity event will benefit East Boston Main Streets.

Winter Jubilee Beer Festival:
January 29th- 30th
Castle at Park Plaza

Time to taste the best of the best winter beers! This annual festival hosts 50 brewers with over 200 winter beers to sample! While this event has been going on since 2002, each year continues to improve.  This year they’ve added more brewers and beers ranging from international brewers with popular winter brews, to local hid gems breweries with less well known winter brews. For anyone who loves a good beer, you do not want to miss this spectacular craft beer event!



November Events in Massachusetts

With the holiday season starting, there are a ton of festive activities happening around Massachusetts this month.  From festivals to parades to tree lighting ceremonies, check out MassDrive’s favorite activities and events happening in November!

For the Love of Beer Festival
November 7th

Boston’s very own Sam Adams Brewery will host For the Love of Beer Festival at the Greenway in Boston. Featuring over 50 different beers, food trucks, and a slew of tasty snacks to munch on, it will definitely be a delicious event! Admission to the event includes all your samples, and souvenir sampling cup. For the inner child in you, enjoy the inflatable hop slide, interactive games and giveaways!

Boston Comedy Festival
November 6th – 14th

Need a good laugh?? You’re in luck. The Boston Comedy Festival will take place for one week throughout Boston! With around 100 comedians from around the world, there will a lot to laugh about. With big names such as Andy Kindler from Tosh.0 and America’s Got Talent Wendy Liebman, it’s an event you don’t want to miss. Blink! A Light & Sound Extravaganza- Holiday lights
November 21st – January 3rd, 2016

This ultimate tree light lighting ceremony will be back in Fanuiel Hall for the 4th year in a row. With over 350,000 LED lights, you don’t want to miss this illuminating event! Highlighting the Boston skyline, this beautiful event will warm your hearts as the lights dance along to holiday music. Opening night will be the first tree lighting ceremony of the season, with a Christmas tree even larger than the one at Rockefeller Center! If you can’t make the opening night, don’t worry you can watch every inch of Faniel Hall lit up by this event every night throughout the holiday season.

Plymouth Thanksgiving
November 20th – 22nd

Plymouth Massachusetts will host their 20th annual Thanksgiving celebrations! With a parade, a food festival, craft village and so much more, this event has so much to offer. Happening along the waterfront, Pilgrims tour guides will begin the event with stories from the founders of America’s Hometown. Then enjoy a free Veterans Memorial Concert in honor of all those who have served in our Armed Forces. The event will also feature Native American’s, soldiers, and pioneers bringing to life the history of Thanksgiving.

Jingle Bell Run/Walk
November 22nd

This festive 5K is great way to get into the holiday spirit by helping others! Raising money for Arthritis, the Jingle Bell Walk/ Run is a spirited way to help those in need. Everyone dresses up in holiday themed costumes with jingle bells tied to their shoelaces to kick of the holiday season together. Pre-event registration is $35 and $15 for children 12 and under, and event-day registration is $40. Get your Santa hat, reindeer antlers, and running shoes ready and sign up today!

Big Apple Circus
Various dates throughout April: Boston, MA

The Big Apple Circus’s new show Metamorphosis will transform you into a realm of of enchantment and illusion! In the dreamlike tent where no one sits more than 50 feet from the ring, the entire show will enthrall you.  Come see the Flying Trapeze, the razzle-dazzle of the Rolla-Bolla, the dynamo of the Diablo, the risky rhythms of the Risley team, the cunning conjurors of the Quick-Change, and the incredible flexible limbs of the Contortionists!

Festival of Flowers
April 9 – April 12: Springfield, MA

For art and floral enthusiasts alike, this show features over 50 works of art, science, or history reinterpreted by floral designers. From landscapes to a motorcycles to Native American objects, the florists took inspiration from every aspect of life.  Be sure to go watch the Floral Design challenge as floral designers compete to make the most original pieces using surprise materials.  Complete with a Floral Fashion show and Cultural Cocktail event, this is truly a unique event.

Kite Day at Cogswell’s Grant
April 11: Essex, MA (Rain date April 12)

Come see the amazing professional kite flyers from Kites Over New England! Watch this stunning event as hundreds of beautiful kites take to the sky.  Grab your own kite and join in, or learn how to make your own at Kite Education’s workshop.  The workshop includes all materials necessary, and teaches kids and adults how to make their own kite, and how to fly them.  Registration is recommended for the workshop.

Brit Floyd: Space & Time- World Tour
April 11: Lynn, MA
April 12: Worcester, MA

The world’s greatest Pink Floyd show returns in 2015 to launch its most ambitious tour to date!  The Space & Time Tour presents an impressive new light show, an even bigger stage production, and decades of Pink Floyd.  With songs from their start in 1965, all the way through their brand new album ‘The Endless River’, this show comes with everyone’s favorites and more.  From The ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, to ‘Animals’, come experience this amazing world tour while you can!

Boston Marathon
April 20: Greater Boston Area, MA

This Patriot’s Day come show your support the amazing Boston Marathon runners.  Going back to 1897, the Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world.  Starting on Main Street in the rural town of Hopkinton, the racers make their way to Hancock Tower in Copley Square, Boston.   With miles and miles for spectators to watch, come cheer for these amazing athletes, and then stay in Boston to continue the celebrations!

Nantucket Daffodil Festival
April 24- April 26: Nantucket Island, MA

The charming tradition occurs at the end of every winter.  Nantucket says goodbye to the cold winter, and welcomes the warm spring with the Daffodil Festival.  April’s gentle sea breezes and warming sunshine foster an amazing variety of daffodils across the island.  Come check out antique cars beautifully decorated with daffodils, enjoy live music, and then relax at the tailgate picnic featuring an assortment of food from gourmet cuisine to delicious burgers.



More September Events!

Semptember is a month of transition from the hot days of summer to the cool crisp days of fall.  It is one of the last months that we will be able to enjoy outdoor events before it gets too cold which is all the more reason to take advantage of these happenings this month!  Whether you want to go out with family, friends, or are looking for some date night ideas, we’ve got you covered this month!

Celebrate Paddy’s 1st Birthday! – Animal lovers young and old will enjoy this upcoming event at the Stone Zoo.  Paddy the white-cheeked gibbon is celebrating his very first birthday this Saturday, September 8th with a zoo-wide celebration.  The party will begin at 11 AM and go until 3 PM, and the white-cheeked gibbon exhibit will be specially decorated for Paddy and his friends.  The gibbons will get treats just for them and guests can enjoy various foods, crafts, zookeeper encounters, and many additional activities throughout the day.  There will also be a live performance from Vanessa Trien and The Jumping Monkeys, a popular band for families, and a reading by 8-year-old author, Anna Rudy of Stoneham from her book, The Stone Zoo.  Stop by with the family for some snacks and to celebrate Paddy!  Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $10 for children ages 2-12 (children under 2 are free).

New England Dessert Showcase – Got a sweet tooth?  Don’t miss the 2012 New England Dessert Showcase, this Saturday, September 8th from 10 AM – 5:30 PM at the Sheraton Boston hotel.  Guests can buy tickets for the entire day or simply for one session of the day.  Sessions include private tastings, a morning session, afternoon session, and quick fix before dinner.  You can also opt for general admission or pay a bit more with the VIP Package, if you’re a self acclaimed chocoholic there’s a Private Tasting Package available which includes everything from the VIP package as well as private tastings with select vendors.  Prices vary based on which type of ticket you want, but guests will have access to unlimited dessert tastings while they are there and may even witness a live food demonstration put on by a participating local chef!  Tickets are available online or over the phone but get yours here before they sell out!

College Fest 2012 – If you’re a college student in Boston, you don’t want to miss this event!  College Fest is one of the biggest parties that kicks off the semester each year (over 17,000 attendees each year) and is coming up on Saturday, September 22nd until Sunday, September 23rd.  It is at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston and begins at noon both days and ends at 7PM on Saturday and 6PM on Sunday.  Tickets for the event are $15 which is a bargain price for what attendees will walk away with!  With entertainment and performers such as Wale, The Cataracs, Kel Mitchell (yes, of Kenan and Kel), and many more it is guaranteed to be a good time!  There will also be a ton of free swag and vendors promoting their latest products including Rockstar, GNC, Johnny Cupcakes, Boston Ballet, Loon Mountain, Virgin Mobile, New Balance, and Live Nation just to name a few.  What are you waiting for?  Get your tickets today!

Cape Cod Brew Fest – The first ever Cape Cod Brew Fest kicks off on Saturday, September 29 at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds and trust us, if you’re 21+ you do not want to miss out on this!  The Brew Fest is celebrating 30 Craft Breweries featuring over 60 styles of beer, and will host two tasting sessions, one from 1PM – 4 PM, and the second from 5PM – 8PM.  General admission is $45 and includes entry to one session of the the Inaugural Cape Cod Brew Festival, entry to the 18th annual Cape Cod Harvest Festival, a complimentary pint glass, and unlimited samples!  VIP Tickets are also available for $75 and include everything that the general admission tickets do as well as a complimentary event T-shirt, entry to the VIP Sampling Tent with up to 10 additional select/reserve beers to sample, and access to VIP bathrooms.  Don’t plan on drinking? Designated Driver tickets are available for $15 and must be purches with either a general admission or VIP ticket, they include entry to the event, complimentary water and soft drinks, as well as a complimentary pint glass.  Participating breweries include Sam Adams, Troegs, Blue Hills Brewery, Berkshire Brewing Co, Magic Hat, Allagash, Wachusett, Woodstock Inn Brewery, and many more.  Tickets are available for pick up at select locations or can be mailed out, for more information on tickets click here.
