Northeast Animal Shelter

Furry Friend Friday With Arlo!

Arlo

What’s the best way to start off the weekend? With a Furry Friend Friday interview of course!  We’re back with your weekly dose of cuteness, and today the furry friend we got to speak with is Arlo!  He’s a feisty, 6 month-old terrier mix up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem and is patiently waiting for his forever family.

So Arlo, how does a handsome guy like you find himself in a shelter?

Well believe it or not, someone left me tied to a pole!  Can you believe someone would just leave me like that?  Luckily I was found by some nice people and brought to the shelter as a stray.  I was never claimed so now I’m ready to find my new best friend!

So what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Running, running, and more running!  I may be small, but these little legs can move!  I’m still a puppy so I have a ton of energy, and I’m very curious so I love to investigate my surroundings.  I also love playing with toys, although I don’t really have a favorite one.

Is there anything that scares you?

Nope, I’m very outgoing and can’t  think of anything that scares me.  I’m kind of known as a tough guy around the shelter, they say I can be fresh but I’m not mean at all, I’ve never bitten anyone I just get mouthy when I want some attention.  I think I’m the boss and want all of your attention for myself!

Is there anything that makes you extra unique?

Even though I’m a terrier, I have very soft fur and my friends at the shelter say I can look like all different kinds of dog breeds depending on my haircut!  I used to have a cut that made me look like a schnauzer, but I think this look is much more “me”.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well first off, I’d say no young kids.  Like I said, some consider me to be fresh, and I also love attention so I don’t want any kids taking that away from me!  I don’t like being bossed around, so I would also need a dog savvy owner that would know how to discipline me.  I’d also love to be with a family that was as active as me, I have so much energy and would love to burn it off at the beach or on a hike!

Arlo, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Pets get sick just like people do, I’ve seen it with my own two eyes!  It seems like it would just make sense to have insurance to protect your pet so that if they get hurt or sick they can get the care they need without breaking the bank.

Arlo may be young, but he’s a fast learner!  He knows the value of pet insurance, and how important it can be when it comes to protecting your furry friend!  Call one of our agents today for a free quote and take the first step on the road to protecting your furry friend!

Furry Friend Friday With Chico!

chico 3

Happy Furry Friend Friday!  Who’s ready for their weekly does of cuteness?  We know we are!  Meet Chico, a feisty 3 year-old chihuahua up for adoption at Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem.  Chico’s been in the shelter for a few months now and is patiently waiting for the perfect family for him!

So Chico, what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

I’m a man of many interests, but I’d have to say my favorite thing to do is just be around my favorite people, and there aren’t many of those.  I’m very selective with who I give my affection to, but if you’re one of the lucky ones you’ll never find a more loyal friend.  If I could, I’d stay with my favorite people all the time, I love sitting on their laps and going for rides with them in the car, and the best part is that I’m travel size!

Do you have a favorite toy to play with?

I like to play ball sometimes but other than that, I’m not very interested in toys.  I’d much rather get a nice head scratch while I lounge on the couch!

Is there anything that scares you?

Well I’d say I get nervous when I’m around new people, if they come at me too fast and I don’t know them it makes me jump and I don’t like it.  I also get overwhelmed in crowds, like if my people were having a party at their house I’d rather be upstairs in the bedroom and have some space to myself.  I also don’t like being in a crate or anything, I get very anxious and would rather be free to roam around the house.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

I would prefer to be in a home that’s pretty quiet, and with someone who can be home a lot so we can keep each other company.  If I found someone who was retired that would be perfect! We could have breakfast together and then watch some TV, I’m a fan of “The Price Is Right”, and then run some errands together!  Other than that my only requirement is to be in a home with no kids, sometimes they can make me nervous because I like my boundaries and personal space before I get to know someone, and kids aren’t always good at that.

Chico, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well, dogs of all ages can get sick or have an accident unexpectedly.  For example, I’m a young guy but when I first arrived at the shelter I had a skin condition on my ears, and luckily the staff here were able to get it cleaned up but if I had owners that had to pay for it, it would have been pretty costly.  Pet insurance seems like a good thing because you only have to pay a small amount each month, to make sure your pet can get the health care they need if they get sick or hurt.

Chico’s a very smart pup, and is right when he says vet treatments can be costly.  Pet insurance is an affordable investment that will help you get your furry friend the care they need without draining your savings.  Call one of our agents today for a free quote!

Furry Friend Friday With Spoone!

spoone

Happy Furry Friend Friday!  Are you ready for all of the snow we’re supposed to get on Monday?  Spoone is ready for it but not exactly excited, this 5 year old boy is originally from Georgia so is used to much warmer weather!  He’s a cute German Shepherd mix up for adoption at Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem and is excited to be here and find his forever family!

So Spoone, what is your favorite way to spend the day?

Even though I’m the oldest dog here in the shelter, I can still keep up with the young pups and I love being outside playing.  I get along great with the other dogs here and love hanging with them, but if they’re busy I love to run and chase my tennis ball.  My friends here at the shelter say that I really get excited when they play keep away with me, it’s one of my favorite games!

Do you have a favorite toy to play with?

My tennis ball is by far my favorite!  See it in my picture with me? I never want to let it go once I have it!  I could chase that thing for hours, I’m pretty easily entertained and just an overall happy guy, but when I have my tennis ball I’m the happiest dog in the world!

Is there anything that scares you?

Nothing that I can think of and nothing that the staff here have observed, like I said, I’m an overall happy guy and don’t let too many things get to me.  I’m even happy to be here in the shelter!  Of course I’d rather be in my own home with my own family, but I’m able to make the most out of any situation.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Who wouldn’t love me?  Don’t I look like I should be lounging on your couch right about now?  I would love to go to a fun-loving family that would love to play fetch with me and my beloved tennis ball.  I love any and all people, big or small but because I am a bigger boy I would probably be best around children ages 10 and up.  Have another dog?  I’m sure we would get along great and would love for you to pay me a visit if you think I could be part of your family!

Why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well in my short life, I’ve lived in a few different places and seen A LOT.  I’ve seen a lot of great things and some things that weren’t so great.  I think that you should be prepared for anything, life is so unpredictable but if you have pet insurance you can at least be prepared to get your furry friend proper vet care without breaking the bank if the time comes.

Spoone is a very worldly gentleman, and is right about life being unpredictable.  We never know what may happen or what direction life may bring us in, but with pet insurance you can be sure that your furry friend will be able to get the vet care they need should the unexpectedly get sick or have an accident.  Call one of our agents for a free pet insurance quote today and make sure your furry friend is protected!

Furry Friend Friday With Baxter!

baxter 2

Happy Furry Friend Friday!  What better way to kick off your weekend than with a does of some serious cuteness?  Meet Baxter, this cute little chihuahua is up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem and is about 5 months old.  He’s been there since November, so he’s ready to kick off the New Year with a new home!

So Baxter, what is your favorite thing to do?

Well I don’t know if I can pick just one, there are so many things I love to do!  I especially love playing, whether it’s with my other K-9 friends or with one of my toys, I love to be entertained, I’m still a puppy after all!  Even though I’m pretty active, I still love being around people and cuddling.  I’m very lucky here at the shelter, the staff all carry me around like a baby, I love that so much that sometimes I fall asleep while they’re carrying me!

Do you have a favorite toy to play with?

I have a green ball that I absolutely love to play with!  You can see me playing with it in my video at the bottom of the page.

Is there anything that scares you?

Well being a smaller guy, I don’t love a lot of commotion.  When people are running around and things are hectic, I get a little stressed but I wouldn’t say scared, just nervous.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well I can get along with anyone, really, but I’m what you would call a “special needs pet”.  You see I was rescued from a hoarding situation in Alabama, and when I got to the shelter here, the staff discovered that I have what’s called Megaesophagus.  Basically that’s just a big long word meaning that when I eat the food has a tough time being pushed down into my stomach, it can be very dangerous if not treated correctly.  It’s not hard at all to manage, I just need to be in a home with someone that can be home with me a lot.  You see I eat about three meals a day and I have to eat sitting upright and then remain upright for a half hour after I eat.  It’s pretty easy, the staff here just put me in a small front dog carrier, I’m very light to carry and love sitting like this, I sometimes even fall asleep like this!

baxter 1

So Baxter, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well, as I’ve already learned in my short life, sometimes things you don’t expect can change your life in a big way.  I’m doing very well with my condition and it’s extremely manageable, but some other pets aren’t always as lucky as me, so pet insurance seems like a good way to make sure they can get health care should they need it.

Baxter is wise beyond his years, or months rather.  Pet insurance is a great option to consider and it ensures that your pet and wallet will be protected should they have any unexpected accidents, or come down with a sudden illness.  Call one of our agents for a free quote and take the first step to protecting your furry friend!

Furry Friend Friday With Chi Chi!

Chichi

Happy Furry Friend Friday everyone!  We’re so excited for the upcoming long weekend, and we’re here to kick it off right with another interview.  Today I got to chat with Chichi, this cute little girl is up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem.  She’s a 7 year-old chihuahua mix who is ready for her forever home!

So Chichi, I hear you originally come from Florida, how are you liking it up here in Massachusetts?

So far I’m loving it!  I love the fall weather, I never really got to experience the seasons in Florida so this is a nice change!

What’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I love cuddling, I’m a great lap dog and even like to climb up on your neck sometimes!  I also like to go for walks, even though I’m 7 years-old, I’m still an active little girl!  I also like to play with toys!

Do you have a favorite toy?

Well here at the shelter I love playing fetch and chasing balls around the yard, I’d have to say those are my favorite.

What about treats?

I’m a total food hound, I love anything and everything I can get my paws on!  At the shelter I get those Pup Peroni treats a lot and those are awesome!

Is there anything that scares you?

Not anything I can think of, I’m not a very skittish dog, but I’m a great watch dog and will always bark and let you know when someone is at the door.  Sometimes I bark at other dogs too but it’s not because I’m scared of them, I actually think I’m pretty ferocious!

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well like I said, I’m still active so I would like to be with a couple or a family with older children that could bring me on walks.  I’m a great companion, cuddle buddy, lap dog, best friend, watch dog, you name it!

Why do you think pet insurance would be a good thing for all pet parents to consider investing in?

When I finally find my forever home, I would consider the people there my family, and I would like to think that they consider me family too!  Pets should be protected like all members of your family when it comes to our health.  Plus, the vet can be pretty expensive if you have to pay a huge bill unexpectedly.

Chichi is wise beyond her years, and she still has a lot of great ones left!  Pet insurance is an easy way to protect your furry friend and you’ll be ready for any unexpected expenses when it comes to their healthcare.  Give us a call today and get a free quote, it’s surprisingly affordable and will leave you resting easy knowing your best friend is protected, just like the rest of your family.

Furry Friend Friday With Berni!

Berni

Happy Friday everyone, we hope you all had a fun and safe Fourth of July!  Yesterday was all about sun, food, fireworks, and fun but today is all about our furry friend!  Meet Berni, this cute girl is only one a half years old and is up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem!  Rescued from Georgia, she is a sweet girl who has never known a home of her own but is definitely ready to find her family!

So Berni, what is your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I love observing everything going on around me.  I’m very curious and love getting out and about to explore.  I’ve been here at the shelter for about 3 months now and get special privileges because I’m such a good girl!   I get to sit in the different offices in the building and even go on field trips!  I am a very active and social girl.  Whether I am going for a walk, run, or playing with other dogs I am having a blast!  Of course I love to snuggle too once I get tuckered out.

Do you have a favorite place to go for a walk?

Like I said I get to go on field trips sometimes and have been to the Lynn woods a few times.  As a hound mix I love getting to use my sniffer and explore the woods, I am originally from Georgia so I guess that makes me a country girl!  Every time I go out I always make sure to wear my “adopt me” vest so that everyone knows I’m still looking for my family!

What about a favorite treat?

I will do anything for a treat!  I love almost all food and had some pepperoni this morning, don’t mind my breath.  Treats have really helped me with my training too, I know how to sit, stay, give paw, and pick up on things very quickly!  If I know I’ll get a treat for being good, I’ll do anything you ask!

Is there anything that scares you?

Not really, I’m a pretty confident girl and have been through a lot so I think of myself as being pretty tough.  I wasn’t even afraid of all the fireworks last night!

So Berni, why do you think pet insurance is so important for pet parents?

Well like I said, I love treats and will do anything for a good snack, even go through the trash.  I haven’t eaten anything bad yet but you never know what can happen or what I may accidentally get into, I am still a puppy after all!  That’s just me specifically, I’m sure all pets have their unique quirks that might get them into trouble, so it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Berni is right, all pets have their unique quirks and personality traits that make them lovable but can also get them into trouble.  Make sure your furry friend is protected and call us for a pet insurance quote today!

Furry Friend Friday With Cybil!

cybil

Happy Furry Friend Friday everyone, we hope you’re staying nice and dry today!  My friend Cybil from the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem is here to chat about her day to day life in the shelter.  Cybil is about 10 years old so she’s an older gal, but she still has as much spunk as a puppy!

So Cybil, what is your favorite way to spend the day?

I love cuddling and being around people, those are my absolute favorite things to do!  I would follow around the shelter staff all day if it were possible, that’s why I’m hoping I find my forever home really soon!  I would be the perfect snuggling companion and love to just sit near the closest person who will pet me.  Doesn’t get much better than a good belly rub if you ask me!  I also like to go for nice long, leisurely walks so that I stay in shape, it’s not easy looking this good!

Do you have a favorite place to go for a walk?

Not really, I am originally from Virginia so am not too familiar with my surroundings here in Massachusetts just yet, we have a play yard near the shelter though and that’s fun.

What about a favorite toy?

I’m not that into toys to be honest.  I would much rather spend my time out and about on a walk or sitting next to my favorite person.  I guess I just outgrew them and am more interested in people.

You look pretty tough to me but is there anything that scares you?

Well I’m not really a fan of other dogs if they are pushy, not that I’m scared, just a little nervous around them if they start trying to jump all over me and I can get a little bossy.  I don’t mind other dogs that are older or more relaxed like myself.  Other than that thunder does frighten me a bit, during the last thunder storm I started to shake a little because I was nervous, and the staff put one of those Thunder Shirts on me and I was much better!

Cybil, why do you think it’s important for all pet parents to have pet insurance?

Well personally I am healthy as a horse, but I know that some dogs start to develop health issues as they age, much like people.  Even if your pet isn’t older, young puppies and kittens can find things to eat and get them into trouble and you never know when that might mean a trip to the vet.

Cybil makes a great point, it may seem like pet insurance is not necessary or only for older dogs, but the reality is that regardless of your pets age, anything can happen and they might accidentally wind up in the vet’s office because they ate something they shouldn’t have or got out of the yard and got hurt.  The possibilities are endless and having pet insurance will leave you resting easy knowing that your furry friend will receive top of the line care and you won’t have to break the bank, so call us today for a pet insurance quote and make sure your best bud is protected!

If interested in adopting Cybil, contact the Northeast Animal Shelter.  One of our past furry friends from the same shelter is still up for adoption as well, his name is Kyle and be sure to check out his interview here!

Furry Friend Friday With Kyle!

kyle furry friend friday

Happy Furry Friend Friday everyone!  We’re back at it and today Kyle was gracious enough to take some time to chat with me.  Kyle is a one year old terrier mix up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA.  If you’re looking for your new best friend, look no further!  Kyle has been waiting for his forever home for a while now and is ready to meet his match.

So Kyle I hear that you are not originally from Massachusetts, where were you before you came to the Northeast Animal Shelter?

Well believe it or not I was in a kill shelter in California!  I’m glad I dodged that one, let me tell you!  I was lucky enough to be found by a rescue organization that works with the shelter here in Salem, and they scooped me up and transported me to the East Coast.

Wow what a scary situation, now that you’re safe what is your favorite way to spend the day here?

I love getting to leave my cage!  As long as I’m not in my cage I’m having fun, and I have a lot of energy to burn once I’m not cooped up in there.  I love to go outside and play fetch, that is my favorite game for sure.  After a nice long game, I like to curl up in the closest lap I can find!  I’m only 8 pounds so I’m the perfect lap dog!  My friends that work at the shelter take me outside with them sometimes and rub me while we get some fresh air, I love doing that especially now that the beautiful weather is here.

Do you have a favorite toy here?

Well as I said fetch is my favorite game, so I would have to say my ball is my favorite toy.  If you’ll throw it, I’ll chase it all day!

Is there anything you’re afraid of?

Well the kill shelter in California was a very scary experience, and even though everyone here in Salem is very nice I hate being in my cage.  I get so nervous when I have to go back in, it’s hard not knowing when I’ll get to go out again or play with my friends!  Sometimes I put up a fuss when I have to get back in, but I’m young so how can you blame me?  As long as I’m not in my cage I’m fine, but if my new family wants to crate train me it wouldn’t be as scary.

Since you’re not a fan of your cage you must be pretty excited when you get to go out for walks, do you have a favorite route that you take?

I’m just happy to be out and about and love to go anywhere!  We have a really nice grassy area near the shelter, and I love going over there to sniff and roll around in the grass, especially when it’s sunny!

Kyle I know you’re young, but why would you want your new family to consider pet insurance for you?

Even though I’m young and healthy, anything can happen!  I’m very careful of course but anything can happen, accidents are accidents for a reason  and even though I don’t plan on getting sick or hurt, I’d want to be protected if something ever happened.

Kyle makes a good point, accidents are accidents for a reason, which is why it is always a good idea to consider pet insurance regardless of your pets age! All of our furry friends deserve the best care possible, so give us a call for a pet insurance quote today!  If you’re interested in meeting Kyle, contact the Northeast Animal Shelter, he would be the perfect companion for an active young couple or family with teenagers!
