Furry Friend Friday With Dobson!

Have you ever seen a face this cute? Meet Dobson, an 8 year-old greyhound girl up for adoption at Greyhound Friends, Inc in Hopkinton!  She’s today’s special guest for Furry Friend Friday and is very excited for her moment in the spotlight.  This sweet girl has spent years as a racing dog and a breeder, so she’s ready to relax and be pampered by her forever family!

So Dobson, what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well, I am getting a little older, and I’ve done a lot in my life so now I mainly like to relax and be around people.  I love being petted and cuddling with my people, but I still enjoy going out for walks every day.  Even though I’m getting on in my years, I still have a lot of life left and love to give!

Do you have a favorite toy?

I actually don’t play with toys too often, but I do have a blanket that I really love!  I like laying on it during the day, it’s so warm and comfy I feel snug as a bug in a rug when I curl up on it.

Is there anything that scares you?

I’d say loud noises tend to make me nervous some times.  We’ve been having a lot of thunder storms this summer, and the loud thunder can get to me.  I’m sure it won’t be as scary once I find a forever family that can cuddle with me when a storm is on its way though.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well I’m really easy to get along with, just ask anyone here at the shelter!  If I could choose my perfect family though, I would choose to go with a family that loves to cuddle and relax but would still bring me for walks every day.  They wouldn’t have to be very long walks, just some time for me to get outside and sniff around while getting some fresh air.  I’m very mild-mannered and can be shy at first, but I know the right family will just fall in love with me.  I’m great with other dogs and would be fine with grade-school age kids as long as they were dog-savvy and didn’t pull on my ears or tail.  I’m an all around love bug and am ready to go to my forever home!

Dobson, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well, all pets need to go to the vet for one thing or another throughout their life, so having pet insurance seems like a good way to make sure your pet can get the vet care they need without you having to max out your credit cards.

Dobson is as smart as she is cute!  Pet insurance is an affordable way to protect your pet like a member of the family, because pets are a part of the family after all!  Call one of our agents for a free pet insurance quote today and take the first step to protect your furry friend!

Furry Friend Friday With Rayna!

Happy Furry Friend Friday!  It’s our favorite day of the week, how many of you can say that you get to chat with cute animals every Friday?  Today our special guest is Rayna, a 2 year-old dachshund and terrier mix up for adoption at the Sterling Animal Shelter.  She’s been at the shelter for over a month now, which is far too long for someone with a face as cute as hers!  Rayna is ready for her forever home, so if you think she could be your new best friend pay her a visit!

So Rayna, what’s your favorite way to spend the day?

I’m just your typical pup I’d say, I love going out for walks!  I’d say that’s my favorite thing, the staff here at the shelter are awesome and bring me for about four walks a day!  After that I love playing with some toys to burn off the rest of my energy, and once I’m tuckered out there’s nothing better than a cuddle sesh with my favorite people.  I love to snuggle and jump up on laps, I’m only 20 pounds though so I’m not too heavy, I’d say I’m the perfect size for a lap dog!

Do you have a favorite toy that you like to play with?

I can’t choose one specific toy, but I love all plush squeaky toys!  Those are my favorite, I love getting a hold of them and running around and teasing my people with them, they think they can snatch it away from me, but I’m too quick for them!

Is there anything that scares you?

I wouldn’t use the word scare, I’d say loud commotion makes me nervous, and I tend to be timid around young children.  The way I see it, young children usually cause loud commotion, and sometimes they aren’t always dog-savvy and will pull on my tail and ears, which can be really annoying and even painful!

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well, first off I think I would need to go to a home with kids that are ages 12 and up.  Other than that I would hope that my new family would be active and like to bring me on walks, I’ve always wanted to go to the beach so maybe that’s something we could try.  I don’t have any other requests, I just want to be loved and petted by an awesome family that will love me forever!

So Rayna, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well, pets can get sick just like people can, so doesn’t it make sense to get them insurance too?  I know the vet can get pretty expensive, I think sometimes it’s just as hard for people to go as it is for pets, pet insurance seems like a smart way to make sure you can get your furry friend the care they need without emptying your savings.

Rayna is as smart as she is cute!  When it comes to pet insurance, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves, so call one of our agents today for a free pet insurance quote and get your furry friend the protection they deserve!

Furry Friend Friday With Keeno!

It’s our favorite time of the week, and not just because it’s Friday, but because it’s Furry Friend Friday!  Today we got to chat with Keeno, a handsome guy who’s up for adoption at the Lowell Humane Society.  He’s a mastiff mix and is about 7 years-old, he’s been at the shelter since March, so he is definitely overdue to find his forever family!

So Keeno, how did you end up at the shelter?

It’s kind of a long story, but basically I was in New York and was found tied up outside as a stray, and then I was brought here, and was found as a stray again!  It’s been a rough road and I’ve been bounced around a lot, but I’m really hopefully that my new family will be my forever family!

What’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well I really love to cuddle and be around my favorite people, I follow them around and sit at their feet whenever I can!  If you sat on the floor, I’d probably try and sit on your lap as well, I know I’m a big boy but I’m still a baby at heart.  I also like to go for short walks, I used to be more active but I’ve been on a restricted activity level due to a recent knee surgery.

Knee surgery? That doesn’t sound fun at all, what was wrong with it?

I had a chipped bone in my patella, I’m on the road to recovery, but I still need people to be patient with me while I recover.  I need to walk slow and have plenty of rest, I also need more mental stimulation like games and maybe even some kong toys filled with peanut butter!

Do you have a favorite toy that you like to play with?

I really love all types of chew toys, and now that I can’t move around as much I spend a lot of time playing with them!

Is there anything that scares you?

Nothing comes to mind really, I’m a pretty tough boy, can’t you tell?  I’ve seen a lot in my days and nothing really made me nervous.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well I’d definitely need to be the only pet, I want all of the attention for myself!  Other than that, I’d need to go with a family that will be patient with me during my recovery, which should only last another month or so.  I’d also like to go with a family that would take me on long walks and even hikes once I’ve recovered fully.

So Keeno, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well look at me for example, my surgery would have been very expensive to pay for!  Luckily the shelter and some very generous people were able to cover it, but if I had an owner who didn’t have pet insurance, my surgery would have taken a major chunk out of their savings account!

Keeno is a perfect example of why all pet owners should consider investing in pet insurance.  Call one of our agents for a free pet insurance quote today and take the first step in protecting your furry friend!

Furry Friend Friday With Flash!

flash 3

Faster than the speed of light, the star of today’s Furry Friend Friday interview has a name that certainly suits him!  Meet Flash, and okay maybe he’s not faster than the speed of light, but he certainly has some wheels on him!  This playful pup is up for adoption at the Scituate Animal Shelter and is about 1 year-old.

So Flash, you have a very unique look to you, what kind of dog are you exactly?

Why thank you, I’m a Podengo Portugueso, and this was actually the first year that we were recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club!

So what do you like to do all day?

Well I’m still a pup, and us Podengo Portugueso’s are known for our high energy levels, so the combination of those two factors means I’m very active!  I have a lot of energy to burn so I really like to go for long walks and run around, I can’t be off leash though because I have a very strong prey drive and will chase anything I see, like rabbits and squirrels.  I also love to play in fenced-in yards so that I can play fetch!  I love people too, although I’m not much of a snuggler I have to admit.

Do you have a favorite toy?

It’s hard to choose, but since I love to chase things I’d have to say either a frisbee or a ball that I could run after over and over again.

Is there anything that scares you?

Nope!  I’m happy to report that I’m a very brave guy, and I can’t really think of anything that would scare me or make me nervous.  Maybe it’s because my breed is known for our ability to chase things down, we have to bravely run into unknown situations so I can’t be afraid of loud noises or things that might scare your typical dog.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well, I’d need to be with a family that is just as active as me, and that can bring me for lots of walks and spend time playing with me.  I would also need to go with a family that would be patient with me, as I am still a puppy and need help with my training right now.  I think I would really benefit from some puppy training classes, lots of love, and positive reinforcement!  Other than that, because I’m so active and have a tendency to jump, I could only go to a home with older kids ages 10 and up, it’s not that I don’t like little kids, I just wouldn’t want to accidentally knock them down and hurt or scare them.  When it comes to other pets, no cats because I would chase them all the time!  I get along with most dogs though as long as I can meet them and get to know them first.

So Flash, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well lucky for me, I haven’t had an instance where I’ve gotten sick or had any type of accident that’s brought me to the vet, but not all pets are as lucky.  Every day pets swallow keys, eat a chocolate bar, or come down with some sickness that needs the vet’s attention, and those guys aren’t cheap!  From what I know of the vet’s office, it’s a scary place for pets and people!  Scary for us because come on, who actually likes the doctor’s office?  And it’s scary for people because it can be pretty expensive, plus we know you’re also nervous for your furry friends.  It seems like pet insurance is a good way to make sure the vet’s office doesn’t have to be as scary, at least not for you.

Flash is a very smart boy!  He knows that no one likes the vet, neither pets or people.  Pet insurance is an easy way to make sure your furry friend, and your wallet are protected.  Call one of our agents today for a free pet insurance quote and take the first step in protecting your furry friend!

Lightning Safety Tips

Hurricane season is here, and it seems like we’ve been having thunder and lightning storms every week.  While these storms can sometimes be fun to watch, they can also be extremely dangerous.  People are injured by lightning every year, but these simple tips will ensure that you stay safe!

  • It’s important to stay alert and aware of local weather forecasts, whether you’re staying local or going somewhere on vacation, make sure you look up local weather forecasts so you can avoid being outside if a thunder and lightning storm is expected.
  • It is not safe to be outside during a thunder and lightning storm.  Seek shelter immediately, being indoors is the best option but if not stay inside an enclosed metal vehicle.  Even if it is not raining, as soon as you hear thunder or see lightning, immediately stop your activities and head inside.
  • Once you’re inside, stay off porches, away from windows and doors, avoid appliances, sinks, toilets, showers, and tubs.  Lightning can flow through these objects and strike a person.
  • Avoid using corded telephones.  If telephone wires are struck the charge could flow to the phone, Cordless phones and cell phones are still safe to use though.
  • If you are outside and cannot seek shelter, stay away from trees and other tall objects.  If these are struck and fall over, you could be seriously injured.  Avoid high places such as hills, and get to the lowest spot possible.  Crouch down with your feet close together, keep your hands and knees off the ground and never lie down.
  • If you are swimming or boating, get to land immediately and take shelter.  If you are on a boat and cannot get to land, get below deck if possible or crouch as low as you possibly can.
  • Stay away from objects that conduct electricity such as power lines and metal fences.
  • Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last boom of thunder just to be sure the storm has completely passed.
  • If someone nearby is struck by lightning, call 911 immediately and if the person is unconscious, begin CPR if you are qualified.  People struck by lightning do not carry an electric charge so it is perfectly safe to assist them.

Although thunder and lightning storms can happen year-round, hurricane season is the busiest season for these storms, and by keeping these tips in mind, you will greatly reduce your risk of being struck by lightning.

Furry Friend Friday With Eagle!

No, he can’t fly, but today’s Furry Friend Friday interviewee certainly is majestic!  Meet Eagle, a 5 year-old greyhound up for adoption at Greyhound Friends, Inc in Hopkinton.  This handsome guy has been in the shelter for about 3 weeks now, and is ready to find his new best friend!

So Eagle, I hear that you came a long way to find your forever family, is that true?

Yes, you’re right!  I’m originally from West Virginia, I used to be a racing dog but that life just wasn’t for me.  I was lucky enough to hitch a ride up north and ended up in Hopkinton with the wonderful people at Greyhound Friends, now I just have to sit and wait for the perfect family!

What’s your favorite way to spend the day?

Well, I like to start my day with a nice breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day!  I get a nice helping of kibble, mixed with can food, rice, and a little bit of warm water, I like to call it the breakfast of champions!  After that I like to go for a walk, take a nap, run around a bit, play with my toys, maybe take another nap, and then hang out with my favorite people of course!

Do you have a favorite toy that you like to play with?

I love stuffed squeaky toys, they’re so much fun I love to chew on them and can even toss them up in the air!  It’s pretty impressive if I do say so myself.

Is there anything that scares you?

Well I like to think of myself as a tough guy, but I will admit that loud noises tend to make me nervous, like thunder, sirens, and things like that.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well, I do have a medium activity level, so I’d say I’d like to go with a family that can bring me for walks and maybe even has a fenced in yard that I can run around in.  I’m also very social, I love other dogs so if you already have one I’m sure we would become best friends, I can’t say the same about cats though.  I’m great with kids, very friendly, and would be fine if you had to leave me to go to work.  I could really fit in anywhere!

Eagle, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well, as pets, our humans  are the only family we have, so we like to think that you consider us to be part of the family as well.  Shouldn’t we be protected like the rest of the family?  Not to mention, it sounds like pet insurance can keep you from having to pay a huge vet bill if your pet were to get sick or have an accident, so why not invest in pet insurance?  You’ll be protecting your pet and your wallet!

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!  Eagle is a very smart boy, and he knows how important pet insurance can be when it comes to protecting your pet and your wallet.  Call one of our agents today for a free pet insurance quote and take the first step of protecting your furry friend against the unexpected!

Tips To Stay Cool In The Summer Heat

It’s that time of year when the sun is shining and temperatures are on the rise.  Being outside can not only be unpleasant, it can also be dangerous if you’re not careful as heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real dangers.  Here are some tips that will keep you staying cool as a cucumber, some of them may be reminders but they’re still important to keep in mind!

  • Drink plenty of water.  It’s important to stay hydrated during the warmer months because when your body is hot it dehydrates more quickly.  Try to keep a water bottle on you at all times and if you’re going outside, put the water in the freezer first and as the ice melts you’ll still have cold water.
  • Dress appropriately.  Dark colors draw sunlight to you, so try and wear lighter colors if you’re going to be outside during peak heat hours.  It’s also a good idea to opt for cotton clothing because it’s lighter and more breathable than other fabrics such as silk or polyester.
  • Get a fan.  Even if your house has air conditioning, a fan can help circulate the cool air and keep the temperature down.  If you’re going outside consider getting a small portable fan to bring with you, it will keep you cool in crowded spaces and you may even want to consider getting a portable fan with a spray bottle attached to it, so you can give yourself a quick spray of water to cool off.
  • Stay shaded.  This is hard to do if you have to be outside, but try to either wear a hat to cover your head and neck or pull your collar up.  If you’re wearing a hat, you can also pour some cold water in it and then put it back on your head for a quick cool down.
  • Take advantage of public air conditioning.  If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, make plans to go to public places with AC like the mall, a restaurant, or the movies.  You could also always ask a friend who has air conditioning if you can crash at their place for a bit until it cools down.
  • Avoid hot and heavy foods.  These will make you feel hot and slow you down, it’s better to opt for cooler, lighter foods like fruit, vegetables, or popsicles.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol.  These will speed up the process of dehydration.
  • Don’t over do it with exercising.  If you plan on working out, try to do it indoors or in the early morning or evening, that way you’ll avoid the hottest times of day.  You may want to also cut down the time and or intensity of your workout.
  • Take cold showers.  These will help cool you down quickly and stay cool for a while, if this isn’t an option though you can always submerge your feet in a bucket of cool water or run your wrists under cold water for a few seconds.  Most of the heat from your body comes from those areas so keeping them cool will cool down the rest of your body.
  • Limit sun exposure.  This is the easiest way to stay cool, by avoiding direct sunlight, especially during the hours of 10 AM until 6 PM, when the sun is at its hottest.

With these tips, it’ll be easy to beat the heat and stay nice and cool this summer!

Fourth Of July Events Across Massachusetts

The Fourth of July is almost here!  It’s a day for family, friends, fun in the sun, and most importantly, celebrating the birth of our nation!  How do you plan on celebrating?  The beach, a barbeque, or a cookout are all great options, but if you’re looking for something else to do that will get you out and about we’ve got you covered!  There are a lot of events taking place across the Bay State and we know it can be hard to choose, so we’ve narrowed it down for you and listed some of our favorites.

Bridgewater Fourth Of July Celebration – If you’re near the Bridgewater area this Fourth of July, you’re in luck because they have family friendly celebrations taking place all day long!  The festivities begin at 10 AM with a patriotic parade through downtown, and then immediately following the parade The Arts and Music Festival will begin at the Bridgewater State University campus.  The festival will include art, live music, food, dance, face painting, train rides, puppet shows, and much more.  At 5 PM, head to Legion Field for a family carnival that will go on until 9:30 PM, being followed by a spectacular fireworks show.  The rain date for this event is July 5th.

Pittsfield Fourth Of July Parade – Named on of the ten best Fourth of July Parades by USA Today, this is an event you won’t want to miss!  This parade dates back to 1824, and is renowned for it’s small-town feel, musical acts, balloons, and floats.  The theme of this year’s parade is “Made In America”, which celebrates our nation as one which is home to many important discoveries and inventions that have helped shape it into what it is today.  The parade will kick off at 10 AM on Friday, July 4th in Downtown Pittsfield.

Edgartown Fourth Of July Parade And Fireworks – Can you think of any better way to spend the Fourth than by being right on the water, enjoying a classic barbeque, and watching a parade followed by fireworks?  We didn’t think so, and the best part is that this event is perfect for all ages!  The parade will begin at 5 PM at the intersection of West Tisbury Road and Pinehurst Road and will feature bands, antique cars, floats, and much more.  Food such as burgers and hot dogs will also be sold, and the fireworks will begin at dusk (about 9 PM) on the harbor.  The parade, fireworks, and the beach are all free, so pack up the car and head down the Cape for a festive day of fun!

Boston Harborfest – We couldn’t write a whole post on Fourth of July events without mentioning Harborfest in Boston!  Kicking off on July 2nd and going until the 6th, there will be over 200 events across the city to check out including historical reenactments, concerts, guided walking tours, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, the famous Chowderfest, and of course the highlight of the weekend, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at the Hatch Shell, although this event is not technically part of Harborfest.  Oh, and did we mention that the Duck Boats will be FREE from the 3rd to the 5th?  There’s so much going on in Boston this weekend you won’t want to miss out!

Are you as excited as we are for all of these festivities?  Time to put on your red, white, and blue and get out and celebrate America!

Furry Friend Friday With Daisy!

We’re back with another cutie to make your Friday afternoon that much better!  Meet Daisy, she’s certainly as cute as a daisy if you ask us!  This little girl is a 2 year-old hound mix up for adoption at the Sterling Animal Shelter and has been there for about a month now, so she’s been waiting a while for the perfect family!

So Daisy, what do you like to do for fun?

I’m just your typical pup, I like the simple things like long walks where I can take in the smells and sounds of the great outdoors, playing ball, and hanging out with my favorite people.  I’m very affectionate and love getting extra attention and belly rubs!

Do you have a favorite toy you like to play with?

I’d have to say my ball, I love chasing it and it’s so bouncy!  Like I said, I’m pretty simple and can be happy doing just about anything.

Is there anything that you’re afraid of?

Nope!  There isn’t much that can make this girl nervous, my previous owners thought that I was a little nervous around men, but I haven’t been afraid of any of the men I’ve met here at the shelter.

What do you think would be the perfect family for you?

Well, if I could choose, I would love to go to a home with people that would take me on a lot of walks!  I would say I have a medium activity level, so I’m not very hyper but I still like to be out and about whenever possible.  Other than that, I would say I would do best in an adult-only home, it’s not that I don’t like kids, just because of my size I wouldn’t want to accidentally knock them over or anything.  The other thing is that I would be best as an only pet, I don’t really get along with cats, come on, can you blame me?  When it comes to other dogs I don’t mind them but I would still prefer to be the only pet so I can have all of the attention!

So Daisy, why do you think pet insurance is a good thing for all pet parents to consider?

Well I know I’m young, and I’ve been lucky enough to be healthy and accident-free so far, but other pets aren’t as lucky.  Some pets can eat the wrong thing, or come down with an ear infection, there are tons of different things that can land your furry friend in the vet’s office, and land you with a huge bill.  Pet insurance sounds like a good way to prevent a giant, unexpected vet bill that will drain your savings account.

For such a young girl, Daisy sure is smart, and adorable of course!  We know she’ll find her forever family soon, but she makes a great point about pet insurance.  No one wants a huge vet bill because their pet accidentally ate a chocolate bar or came down with an illness, so call one of our agents today for a free quote and find out exactly how affordable pet insurance can be!
